Without light, there are no shapes, no forms, no mood. Lighting should never be an afterthought.

In order to help guide students, she teaches a better understanding of the correlation between lighting, health and wellness and behavior, improved design techniques, the use of established and newer technologies, and practice at learning what light feels like. Dr. Malini Karani

malini-karani

Interior design can be through many varied approaches which vary from an engineering approach to an artistic or conceptual one and many variations in between. As the head of both the undergraduate and post graduate programmes my approach is to encourage students to create conceptual ideas that are fit for purpose. My thought is that students can experiment with concept ideas when they are studying because these are theoretical projects which allow students to run wild with their imagination. It is important that the studio courses allow for trial and error so that students can try things and know that they won’t fail the course because even when they fail, they can learn an important lesson.

I also enjoying collaborating with various industry partners to enhance student learning. Many designers and suppliers like to run student competitions, workshops and lectures so that they can engage with young and upcoming talent. It is always challenging to get students to believe in themselves enough to participate in competitions and it is very rewarding when a student wins. Even when they don’t win the competition, they learn a lot from their experience participating in it. Giving students a well-rounded experience at university is the most challenging and fulfilling past of the job.
